Does God ever disappoint us?

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

Have you ever felt that God’s guidance failed you, or that God led you down a path to disappointment? When We Get Our Wires Crossed,The latest installment in Blaine Smith’s “Nehemiah Notes,” is about what to do when we feel that God has somehow misled us.

Blaine uses an example of such episode from his own life–a relationship that he earnestly believed God had destined for success, but which ended in pain and disappointment. Had God somehow led him down the wrong path? Or is there another perspective we’re missing when we point fingers of blame at God? Blaine has some excellent insights.

Have you encouraged a rookie missionary today?

Friday, January 27th, 2006

There’s a neat section at the Navigators website where you can meet “rookie missionaries” who are engaged in their first year of mission work. Each missonary describes their background and the type of ministry they’re focused on. Most also list specific prayer requests and have a mailing list you can subscribe to for regular updates on their work.

Seems like a great way to keep in touch with global evangelism work and encourage “newbie” missionaries at the same time.

Their latest interview is with Andrew Adamson, the director of the first Narnia film. The interviews offer some surprising insights into the religious lives of Hollywood movers and shakers.

Christians in the workplace

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

What does the Bible have to say about being a follower of Christ in the workplace? The economic differences between New Testament times and the modern day might make you think the Bible doesn’t have much to say about this topic, but you’d be surprised!

Bill Fiess of Know the Word has compiled Bible verses that talk about our relationship to our employers and coworkers, and has provided some commentary of his own. If you’re uncertain how to best reflect Christ in your workplace, these are some useful guidelines.

Making the case for missions in North America

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

Is mission work in North America, where most people are at least somewhat familiar with Christianity already, worth doing? Should the church focus all of its efforts in parts of the world that aren’t so already heavily influenced by Christianity? Here’s an interesting article, written last year by Dawn Ministries’ Ngwiza Mnkandla, that addresses just that question:

The argument “Why should some hear the gospel ten times over when some have not even heard the name of Jesus once?” has been used compellingly to encourage missions to unreached people groups around the world who desperately need to hear for the first time. As a visitor to this country, I also subscribed to this thinking. The short while I have been living in this country compels me to give the other side of this argument. There is an urgent need to reach North America with the gospel like never before.

It’s an encouraging piece for anyone who is working hard on the “home front” in the United States or other Western nations. Mnkandla concludes: “In most foreign missions, its easy to establish a big work in no time. Thumbs up for those who are trying to do it in this postmodern society where God is no longer at the center of life!”
