Jesus and the rich young ruler

Why did Jesus famously tell the rich young ruler that he had to give up his wealth to attain eternal life? Isn’t salvation granted through faith, not through our actions?

In a recent Discipleship Journal article, Bill Gillham suggests that Jesus had a different lesson in mind for his audience. Is the moral of the story that you can’t have money and get to heaven… or was Jesus actually teaching his audience about the futility of seeking salvation through mere obedience to God’s law?
