How to serve others in secret

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

It’s one thing to do good works for people–but it’s something else to do good works in secret, without attracting public notice or even a “thank you.” There’s a famous passage in the book of Matthew that exhorts believers to do good works quietly, out of sight of others, to make sure that they’re not just doing good deeds to receive praise from their fellow man.

So how do we go about quietly doing good? An article at the Navigators website looks at that question–listing some of the obstacles and excuses that can get in your way, and highlighting some practical tips for making quiet, sincere good works a habit in your everyday life.

Questioning your faith?

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

Have you ever questioned whether Christianity was true? Did you feel guilty for experiencing moments (or days, or even years!) of doubt? The latest post at QuestioningFaith says that you shouldn’t feel guilty about experiencing doubt–believe it or not, honest doubt has an important role to play in the Christian faith! From the post:

Without doubt there could be no real faith. Indeed, Christianity is a religion that speaks openly of the kind of doubts and questions you mention. Adam and Eve started us out with matters of doubt and unbelief. Sarah doubted God as did Job and the psalmist—repeatedly so. Jesus responded to his disciples’ doubts, most notably Peter and Thomas. Paul offers more than hints of his own doubts, but he also speaks of the incredible sense of confidence that comes by exercising faith.

Read the whole post, which closes with a fitting quote about doubt from FW Robertson.

The “New Atheists” have been in the news lately–an article at Wired and another at Newsweek profile the rise of a new, more confrontational atheist movement. Over at the Strangely Dim blog, Dave Zimmerman offers some thoughts in response. And Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis responds to the Newsweek piece at the AiG blog. If and when other writers or bloggers weigh in on the topic, we’ll mention them here!

“Expressing Faith”: a new art exhibit at the Billy Graham Center museum

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

The Billy Graham Center museum has a new temporary exhibit up and running through January ’07–a display called Expressing Faith. It explores the many different ways that Christian artists try “to express a spiritual reality, maybe an intangible one, in a visual form that another person can comprehend and respond to.” Although the physical exhibit is located in Chicago, you can read a bit more about it at the BGC website.
