When should we ask God for help with our problems?

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

When is it appropriate to ask God for help, and if we do, what kind of response should we expect? What is our role in solving our own problems, and what kind of role should we expect God to play?

A three-part devotional series on Delve Into Jesus explores these topics by looking at the New Testament letters as well as how Jesus responded to those in need during His ministry. The first devotional explores the necessity of asking God to help us. Part 2 looks at the role God expects us to play in solving our own problems. Finally, part 3 examines the role anxiety plays in letting us know that something is not quite right in the way we’re dealing with our problems.

The Jesus we overlook

Friday, November 9th, 2007

JesusChristians rarely have trouble remember that Jesus was God—after all, that’s pretty key to our understanding of the Gospel story. But in focusing on his divine nature, is it possible that we overlook and minimize the fact that he was also fully human?

Jesus’ dual nature as both God and man is a difficult concept to wrap our minds around, but it’s a important part of Christian belief. Delve Into Jesus offers us some help in understanding this paradox with a new devotional essay, Human God.

What’s in a name? Learning the intimate names of God

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

The name “God” carries with it a lot of preconceptions. When you think of God, do you think of a loving Creator? An angry judge sitting on his throne in faraway heaven? What does that title mean to you?

There’s much more to God can be encompassed in a single name or title–so you might be surprised at the huge variety of names that are applied to God throughout the Bible. In an article at StudentSoul.org, Scott Harris introduces us to several of the unique names for God used in the Bible–names like Pater, Yahweh, El Shaddai, and Kyrios–and explains what each name teaches us about God. If you’ve only ever thought of the Divine Being as “God,” take a few minutes to learn some of his other names!

What are you doing for the next 21 days?

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

It takes 21 days, research says, to form a habit. So why not devote three weeks to forming a good habit? That’s the gist of Back to the Bible’s new 21-Day Bible Reading Challenge, which encourages you to walk through the Gospel of John in a series of short daily devotional readings. You can start anytime, but now’s a particularly good time to begin, since BttB’s radio broadcast is coordinating with the Challenge this month. At the Challenge page, you can sign up to receive the daily devotional emails, as well as participate in community forums about the Challenge.

Daily Lenten reflections from Scripture Union

Friday, February 16th, 2007

Next week marks the beginning of Lent, a season of reflection that culminates with the Crucifixion and the celebration of Easter. As Lent progresses, we’ll be featuring a number of Easter-related resources and articles from around the Gospelcom Alliance, but it seems fit to begin by noting a series of Lent devotionals at Scripture Union.

Scripture Union’s Journey to the Cross is a series of short devotionals emailed daily over the six weeks leading up to Easter. Each email includes (among other things) a Scripture passage, a prayer suggestion, and a reflection designed to help you focus on the message of Lent. You can sign up to receive the emails (which begin on February 26), or download the entire series (in PDF format) to work through it yourself.
