Now, one of the secrets of peace in the midst of great stress, of poise when everything is up for grabs, of perspective when you could be freaking out - the secret is to start celebrating the kind of God you have. What the shepherds gave Jesus must have meant far more to Him than any treasure the wise men brought. It's a gift that is within your power to give - but one that all too few of His followers ever offer Him. Following is exactly what Jesus has commanded those of us who belong to Him to do. His often-repeated command is, "Follow Me." To the extent that we are following the One who's supposed to be in front of us, the happier we are. To the extent we're unhitched and off on our own, we're not very happy. Things work as long as we're following. We often told our children the very best place of all to have a party going on. So does our word for today from the Word of God. It's in Proverbs 15:15. The Bible says, "The cheerful heart has a continual feast." You see, if you carry the party inside you, then life can be a pretty joyful experience - for you and for the people around you. A "continual feast" God calls it. If you've ever been to one of those church meetings where they ask people to share their favorite verses, you've probably heard somebody mention our word for today from the Word of God. Proverbs 3:5-6 - it might be your favorite - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." Notice what's the opposite of trusting in the Lord with all your own heart--trying to figure it out for yourself, doing what you think is best...leaning on your own understanding. n Job 2:10, he asks, "Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" And in chapter 13, verse 15, Job says, "Though He slay me, yet I will I hope in Him." Stubborn faith that still believes that the sun is shining even when you can't see it for the fog. The kind of faith that looks for things to praise God for at a time when it hurts so bad. For the most part, there's not much you can do about memory loss - the mental kind, that is. But there is something you can do about spiritual memory loss - because forgetting spiritually can be pretty damaging, too. It was, in fact, one fundamental reason why God's ancient people kept wandering from God, messing up their lives, and suffering God's judgment. And it's one reason we make the same kinds of mistakes.
