We add new arenas without removing any old ones. Homework competes with extracurricular commitments, household responsibilities, youth meetings, friends. A business person says "yes" until his or her resume' looks impressive, but their contributions in each area are insignificant. An overcommitted woman needs a valet just to manage all her hats: wife, mother, committee worker, volunteer, career person, creator, entertainer. By taking on more than we can possibly do well, we live in direct violation of God's command to "make it your ambition to lead a quiet life." All that really matters now is what's going to last, and it's tragic how ultimately meaningless much of what we spend ourselves on really is. It could be that God has arranged it for someone to be listening right now who is pouring a lot into goals and stuff that really don't matter much. He's been trying to get a wakeup call through to you so you could rearrange your priorities to make a far greater difference with the rest of your life than you've made until now. In a sense, any earth-concern or earth-stuff we invest in is going to turn out to be worth nothing in the end -- even if our financial dividends and profits continue to grow. But "in the end" means "eternity" - where only things that last forever will prove to have been life's most profitable investments. How can someone who's been around Jesus - who knows a lot about Jesus - still miss Jesus? And ultimately miss the heaven that only those who know Jesus will ever see. The people who ended up with Jesus came to the point where they saw that God's way was right - that God should be driving their life.
