I personally recommend John, I had tried to study the bible randomly and in book order and was so overwhelmed. I began to pray for guidance on the matter which I should have done to begin with and God led me to John and through his writings I was able to develop a personal relationship with Christ. I highly recommend prayer before each bible reading. God is so great in how he works. I continued my studies primarily in the new testament before I later moved on to the old. Another thing that was important for me was getting to know about the person that wrote each book. Seeing them as flesh and blood not just an author, it allowed me to appreciate their hardships and victories through God and Christ our Savior even more.
