Article : Do Commandments On Tattoos and Hair Still Apply?

The Bible contains some commandments that don't seem to apply anymore such as commanding men to have short hair, women to have long hair and forbidding tattoos and body piercings. Does God care about these things any more? Do 21st century Christians still need to heed these commandments?

    good question!

i dont think HE likes us getting wrapped up in the details of little things. I went to a gospel hall as a child and they made it mandatory for woman to have long hair, no peircings and to wear a hat. And only the men can talk in the service.
But as a teen ive attended a baptist church where our family pastor was female who preached sermons as well.

1 cor 11 talks about HAIR being a head covering for woman
1 Corinthians 6:19 the body is a temple of the holy spirit

to tatoo or peirce our bodies can be compared to graffitti on someones personal property. As we become children of GOD when we accept Christ in our lives. we are not our own cause we have been bought at a price by Christs sacrifice at the cross. But dont get caught up in this as ppl who come to CHrist after getting tattoos arent going to be cast out cause of it. GOd tells us to come as you are. Not when your perfect.

oh i forgot to make a point about the differnces in the 2 churches…. i think the gospel hall has put way too much emphasis on being perfect and sinless which doesnt compel ppl to want to come to church or know GOD. WHere as my baptist church has become my home church where i feel welcomed in with my ear peircings and short hair with no hat. alot of ppl have stopped going to the gospel hall because of their legalism.

But dont let your outter beauty take over who you are on the inside… the gorgeous models in hollywood are mean and selfish… where as girls who volunteer in soup kitchens dont care if they leave the house without make up on

Well, I can’t figure out how to edit the above. Tattoos are mentioned in Leviticus 19:28.

It’s a bit of a touchy subject, and I don’t know of much further direct Scriptural references to tattooing. I know that I, personally, based on this Scriptural passage and the testimony of the Holy Spirit in my life, don’t plan on having any tattoos made.

However, I go to a church where many people have come into Christ after some time in the world, and several are tattooed. I don’t think that they need, necessarily, to run out and have them all lasered off (unless God tells them to). There are more important matters to consider. It might be a good thing to heed Paul’s logic on this issue in 1 Corinthians 7:

17 Nevertheless, each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches. 18 Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man uncircumcised when he was called? He should not be circumcised. 19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts. 20 Each one should remain in the situation which he was in when God called him. 21 Were you a slave when you were called? Don’t let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. 22 For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord is the Lord’s freedman; similarly, he who was a free man when he was called is Christ’s slave. 23 You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. 24 Brothers, each man, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation God called him to.

Here is my personal take on tattoos. Fist of all, I don’t think anyone is going to hell for having them. Just getting that out of the way! The Bible has many instructions on how to serve God: visit the sick and those in prison, take care of the widows and orphans, fedd the hungry, clothe the naked, love your neighbors and enemies…just to name a few. I have yet to find anywhere where Jesus or the apostles said to Tatoo a cross on you back, Jesus’ face on your arem or even the words “Jesus Freak” on your forehead!!! We are not instructed to make our bodies bilboards for Christ. In fact, the way I see it, the ONLY time tattoos are mentioned in the Bible, what does it say? It says “DON’T”!!! Just a point. Everything I have read concerning tattoos leads me to believe that there is absolutely no Godly reason to get on. Tattooes have been administered for 2 reasons: Pagan ritual, to seek man’s approval! I don’t need man’s approval, just God’s. I agree with Renaissongsman in that if you came to Christ with tattoos, you don’t have to run out and have them removed, but in my opinion, you should not go out and get more. If you come to Christ and are thinking of getting a tattoo (for the first time), think long and hard about the reason. Is it to honor God? Or to seek the world’s approval or gain a sense of belonging? I personally will never get a tattoo, but I guess it’s a personal preference! I don’t condemn those who have them…that’s God’s job:)

This is my first time on the website and I appreciate the respectful nature of the comments posted. I came to the website to educate myself further. I do have tattoos and with everything I do I try to seek the truth. In reference to Lev 19, I think we must take everything in context. My personal belief is that it does not pertain to the “tattoo” that we speak of today. The old testament list many rules in Leviticus that we do not observe. From my teaching I believe that the relationship people held with God was different before Jesus dying on the cross. I believe the relationship we have with Him and the faith we hold is what saves us. However, when striving to live a life like Christ we come across these issues. All of my tattoos are based upon my beliefs in God. They are not done for others in this world or to be part of the world. My tattoos are art to me as well as reminders of my faith. I don’t know if this will change anyones mind but I have had many conversations in tattoo shops about Christ.

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
- 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
