Barabbas in the Bible - a Christian perspective

Barabbas was a criminal who was in prison when Jesus was brought to trial. Pilate offered the people a chance to free one prisoner of their choice, thinking they'd choose Jesus--but they asked for Barabbas' release instead.

  1. John Wright says:

Since Bar-abbas means son-father which means impostor, was Barabbas a common hebrew name or was his Barabbass name an alias?

  2. Chris says:

We’re only told that that’s what he was called. It seems plausible that he had another name given how many biblical characters have alternate names, but I’m not sure. Any Hebrew scholars have an insight into this one?

  3. Bratlie says:

I agree the Scriptures give us scant information regarding Barabbas, but considering that Biblical names often mean something, I find it interesting that this criminal “son of father” is offered up against the genuine “Son of the Father”. I don’t know if we can draw strong conclusions from this “apparent” literary device, but it is as least interesting to me.

  4. jollyjoe says:

Mark 10:46 tells us that Bartimaeus was the son of Timaeus would it not also follow that Barabbas is simply the son of Abbas? As Bar seams to meas son of with the fathers name to follow. IE – The son of his father Abbas.

  5. zaneychapp says:

I don’t know anything but I find it interesting that he was set free which makes him the one of the first sinners that Jesus had saved from death

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
- 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
