Brood of vipers - a Christian perspective

John reserved his harshest words for the religious leaders of his day, who he called a "brood of vipers." Their hypocrisy and adherence to man-made religion made them enemies of his message of freedom.

What can make us like them? I think, the lack of authenticity, integrity and self-interest.
Authenticity: They were too concern about what people though about them, their appearance, the opinion of the general public. They were more concern about the religious status between men then the approval of God.
Integrity: They were not sincere. They hided their sins and tried to build a reputation by showing only their good doing. They didn’t want to expose their vulnerability. The week aspects of their lives were ignored. This selection affected also their Biblical teaching: they choose to emphasize some portion and ignore some very important ones, just to build a doctrine that made sense with their way of life.
Self-interest: Probably this was the main problem. If they could shift their focus to “God-interest” it would be more easy to find the path to authenticity and integrity in their spiritual journey. This is a key aspect for us, Christians living in a very individualistic American Culture. We should be able to put “God-interest” first. God-interest includes all humans (our neighbors and also people far away). A religion that doesn’t include all people it is not a God centered religion.

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
- 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
