Should Christians Meditate?

Meditation is defined as the act of engaging “in mental exercise for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness.” Let’s assume that we’re talking about meditating on a particular passage or phrase in the Bible, or on an aspect of God. Is this something Christians should do?

  1. Edward says:

I believe we should, after all in the book of Joshua, chapter 1:8 , Joshua is commanded by God to do so.

  2. Lenny449 says:

Yes, I believe it is good to meditate and pray also.

  3. Pastor Steve PWP says:

meditation can and is good for the spiritual man when nthe attributes of God, his word and his power are what is meditated on. It should uplift and not tear down. When it starts having a negative effect you are focusing on the wrong thing and the positive things of God should be refocused on

  4. Elder Grim says:

This scripture tells us what we should meditate upon:
Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Do that, and you won’t go far wrong.
Budhist type meditation where you empty your mind however are a no-no.
Instead have the mind of Christ.

  5. Christian Rap Artist EarDrum says:

Psalm 1:1-3 tells us “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shalt not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” Not only should we meditate we should poor out our heart before the LORD of his mercy, he has allowed us access to pray earnestly and have such great joy while doing so. We are stubborn people who rest on our own time and therefore it becomes idolatry which displeases GOD. So great is GOD that he brings atonement in order for us too see his glory. So much grace GOD has to comfort us and bring a yearning into our souls for him. Meditation is a must for Christians.

  6. Coastal says:

Thank you EarDrum for reminding us that God’s Word is firm in its requirement that we should meditate upon scripture so that we might be lifted up and edified by it and gain a deeper understanding of our Lord’s will.
Remember there is a stark contrast between the way the world would have us meditate and the way we are instructed to meditate in scripture. Worldly meditation would have us strive to empty ourselves in an attempt to find peace and harmony but through Christian meditation we would fill ourselves with the light and knowledge of our Creator and Redeemer and find peace everlasting in him.
