Covering in the Bible - a Christian perspective
Paul shares his view on long hair in this passage in 1 Corinthians. He says that it's a disgrace for men to have long hair, but to a woman's glory if she has long hair. It acts as a covering for her.

Well, to be honest I have always been confused by this scripture. If we really are to follow it, then alot of us men and women would look different. Every picture I have ever seen of Jesus has Him with long hair. Every painting from europe or America for the past 500 years has Him as eight a baby with short hair or as a mature man with long hair. I have medium to short hair. I see a lot of women with short hair. I have seen discussions where anything beyond this general rule for both men and women, is rebellion. Long hair for men and short hair for women is a conscious decision to rebel. What use to be considered convenience due to age for example, could be viewed in light of this scripture as rebellion at any age.
It seems pictures of many Bible Heros (Jesus, King David, John the Baptist, etc.) are often depicted as having long hair in the paintings we see. Are these pictures accurate or modern perceptions?
Remember that the people that painted those pictures often times did not actually ’see’ Jesus Christ himself. So the depictions of him are highly inaccurate for the most part. Jesus was from the area around Persia, none of those native people had light skin and blue eyes. I’m sorry, that’s just a fact. When it comes to His hair, none of us really know for sure whether or not He had a long mane of hair or not. Things got interpreted by men and convoluted over time. So it’s hard to say exactly what Jesus did look like, in so far as the actual length of His hair. Personally, it doesn’t really matter how long a woman’s hair is, if she looks good, she looks good. I mean the junk is usually nasty anyways when they take showers and shake all that mess all over the shower walls. Plus they shed like animals anyways when they have long hair. I’m not too sure what’s so ‘glorious’ about that. It’s important to remember that a lot of things in the Bible are cultural references, and they are not ‘literal’ word for word. Jesus himself even spoke in parables that had a meaning that had to be interpreted by his listeners so that they could grasp His meaning.
Are we to go by pictures? Or are we to do as the Bible is written? God’s word is true yesterday, today, and forever. If you add to or take from God,s word, the Bible, you are cursed.
In my (NKJV) Bible there is a section in the back titled “Life In Bible Times.” Under the hairstyle section it says “most men had shoulder length hair held together with a band.” It goes on to say that “Razors were quite expensive, so the cutting of the hair was probably done by the barbers in the cities.” I wore my hair long in my youth, but have shaved it for the past twelve or so years. I have recently started to grow it back the goal being to have it long, now I am no longer sure. I figure all I can do is pray about it and see what the Lord has in store for me.

And I’ve heard it said they “polled” their hair every year, which was cut to the neck line.
Having long hair or short hair has nothing to do with being saved. It has to do with the troubles of the church in Corinth and their culture. Paul himself wore long hair and cut in from time to time in Acts, only to make vows to God as the priest & judges did in the old testiment, Samuel & Samson.(Acts 18:18 & 21:17-26) I don’t think we will be seeing John the Baptist in Heaven, he had long hair nor either will any woman who do not wear a veil on her head, nor women who speak in church. Oh Oh, I may have started trouble there, but it was not I, it was Paul in the same scripture. People really need to study the bible and other text as well to find the truth. Reading other reference books (encyclopedia/dictionary/etc) will not turn you against God, if you truly believe and trust him. We should not concentrate so much on the length of hair, but things that will send you to hell. Rape, murder, substance abuse, etc etc.
so true Praise the Lord

in corinth at that time women with shaved heads were prostitutes who offered and sold their bodies for the gods and goddesses. thats why he tells women that it is glorious to have long hair it is a sign of their repentance from the old religion. not sure what he is implying about men though.
i am aware it has nothing to do with being saved im just curious of pauls perspective
Men with short hair/shaved heads were warriors. So I guess Paul still saw warriors as honnorable people…
