Ebenezer - a Christian perspective

The word Ebenezar means stone of help in Hebrew. In this passage Samuel lays a stone between Mizpah and Shen and names it Ebenezer.

  1. D. Coward says:

Were the Philistines of the Battle of Ebenezar, and the Battle of Mizpah the same, people who had come against Israel? Where did the Philistines come from? I read that they were from Greece, or the supposed continent of “Atlantis”, or the island of Crete. Is there any truth in that? It is also said that they landed on the coast of Egypt and were defeated by the Egyptians, and that the Egyptians instigated the wars with Israel. Is any of this true, and where can I find it in the Bible?

Were the Philistines of the Battle of Ebenezar, and the Battle of Mizpah the same people who warred against Israel in the Bible? Where did the Philistines originally come from? I read that they were possibly from Greece, or the supposed continent of “Atlantis”, or the island of Crete after the great volcanic eruption. Is there any truth in that? A documentary recently aired said that they landed on the coast of Egypt, and were defeated by the Egyptians. Is any of this true, and where can I find it in the Bible, or in Bible Commentaries?

  3. Andy says:

    D. Coward, it’s not known exactly where the Philistines originated, although (as you have noted already) there are numerous different theories out there. The Wikipedia entry on the Philistines seems to nicely sum up what we know, both from archaeological evidence and from Biblical texts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philistines . Does that help?

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
- 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
