Faith alone - a Christian perspective

James seems to argue that it is not by faith alone that we are justified, rather it is by our works that we are justified.

Note that James says “not by faith only” while Paul is stressing that the individual needs to believe on Jesus Christ and his (Jesus) work, here James is taking a somewhat different tack. The issue is not that Jesus sacrifice is not what is necessary but the need for the person to take an active role in life. Do you believe in God, so does Satan (James 2:19)where then is the difference – Jesus said he who loves me will obey me, he also said that we had to remain in him as the branch needs to remain in the vine (John 14-16). These require an active role on our part to join with God in what he wants us to be doing. It may be a simple role, it may be a great role, but whatever it is we need to be active in seeking God and seeking to perform his will in our lives.

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
- 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
