"God's love" in the Bible: Romans 8:38-39
No power on earth or heaven can separate us from God's love. Not our sin, not any authority, not any spiritual force. God's love is unshakable and can always be relied upon.

Sin cannot separate us from God? I ask you people, try the spirits, for whoever wrote this is not a person of God, but a false prophet! The very definition of sin is a spearation from God. Isaiah 59:2, “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” Sin can and does separate us from God, this is why we must come before Him and humbly ask forgiveness for our sins, as He will faithfully forgive us our sins if we do so. If we do not, sin will separate us from God and eventually lead us down the path to destruction.
Wow! That passage says nothing can separate us from God’s love. God LOVES you regardless of your sins, your faults or even the color of your eyes.
Jesus died on the cross for our sins long before we were born, this is truly God’s Love. Nothing could stop His Divine Love from giving us redemption and build a bridge to Him so that we may come and worship Him.
Again this verse did not say sin will not separate us from God. It does say that God’s Love cannot be separated from us by anything.
I agree with PrayerWarrior61, because just above the same passage it says, ‘Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.’ So, salvation does not stop at the cross, Jesus Christ is risen and forevermore intercedes at the throne of God for us. When you say sin, what kind of sin do you mean, cos even when you wake up in the morning and you dont acknowledge God, that is sin. What about the sins that we do unknowingly? Does that mean that we are separated from God eternally? Surely then we dont need an intercessor!!
You seem to forget that the letter was written to the congregation of Christians in Rome and as such was addressing people who were saved. All Christians sin, yet all are saved by the grace of Christ through faith.
The passage says nothing concerning those who reject God, and therefore His free offer of the gospel, which Paul says in Chpt 1 is clearly visible to all.
I understand where Skydawg is coming from. These are the so-called contradictions of the bible. However, when one receives wisdom from God and applies that understanding to His word, one will see that these are actually not contradictions but actually beautiful revelations.
Love of God is taught in the bible as Christ dying for our sins on the cross. This redemption breaks the very power of sin and also supplies the very goodness of God to bring men to repentance. Hence, what has been written in Romans 8:38-39 is correct.
Alot of seeming contradictions come about when one reads and parallel the written words in the old and new testament which talk about the same point. When Jesus’ ministry came, He told the people a lot of things that seem to contradict Moses’ law, such as divorce, adultery and etc. However, these contradictions can be resolved by having revelation about why are they practiced n the first place. Jesus explained about divorce that it was allowed in the Moses’ law only because man’s heart was hard. Divorce as explained by Christ was that it was never meant to be so, for what God has joined, let none separate.
The redemption plan reconciles the world. This power overcomes the separating power by sin.
I have a hard time understanding that concept too. When I sin I cant feel God’s love as strong as before. And the sin that confuses me is when I sin, as in, I feel in my will and heart that I want to go my own way and not follow God at all. And then of course I feel very seperated from God. But it says nothing can seperate me from God. It is very frustrating.
If you take your time and look at the scripture, it reads that nothing can separate us from the Love of God. God is love and God’s love is everlasting. When we sin, yes, lest we confess, repent, it does separate us from God. It is very difficult to get to God thru a house of sin. But that does not stop God from loving us. And knowing, understanding that He is an all loving God will help us understand that we need to confess our sins, those we have committed knowing and unknowingly, truly repent our sins, wanting to and seeking to be delivered so as to not continue in that sin, then He can wash us white as snow and we can get rid of that sin that separates us. God is a all loving…always loving God.
@Skydawg: Sin does separate us from God, but not from his LOVE. God loves us unconditionally, no matter what we do, but sin can sever our relationship with him.
If I understand the scripture correctly, it says that no eartly thing can seperate us from the love of God. It does not actually say “sin”.Sin is a result of our choice to perform(or not perform) certain actions. I have also been searching the scriptures around the concept of “unconditional love” and could not find the actual term in the scripture. Though God’s character is essentially love, and He first loved us, I think we have become too comfotable with that concept, underestimating the devestating consequences of sin9by choice). I agree with Possil that the letter addresses a group of saved people and admonishes them to grow in their faith, therefore through the work of the Holy Spirit in them, they would have received a conviction of what sin is. I am learning to rely on the Counsel and Teaching of the Spirit to do the same for me. Perhaps a subject that has become “difficult” to discuss in churches, not very popular?
To Digoutyoursoul I just want to tell you that after you repent you have to forgive yourself. That is normally what trips us up when we sin. We beat ourselves up. God said that he casts our sins into the sea of forgetfulness. We are the ones that hold on to it and don’t “forget.” What you feel in condemnation not conviction from God. The Bible says that there isn’t any condemnation through Jesus. Work on forgiving yourself and don’t beat yourself up trying to be perfect.
All are beautiful statements…One thing is for sure….Few are chosen!!! Many are called. Those that are Chosen to Love others because of God and His LOVE, regardless of his/her sin nature, basically don’t have any control over the situation. They will try to “run” as Job did when told to go and preach to the people of Ninevah! God had a fish prepared for Him as a result lives were saved! Our purpose from God here on earth is to have “daily” denials of ourselves and the ill motives we have as human beings. And put God’s 1st in all that we do! In all our ways acknowledge Him…. All the rest will fall in line. It sounds pretty simple, but it’s how we are to live in these last and evil days. No weapon(sin) formed against us will prosper!! Typed in Humility & Love!
THE KEY WORDS ARE “which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” NOTHING CAN SEPARATE YOU EXCEPT YOURSELF — YOUR DECISION NOT TO ABIDE IN HIM. READ JOHN 15 1-17. YES HE BORE OUR SINS(THE EVIL ACTS) YET SIN IS A LIVING THING THAT WILL ALWAY DWELLS IN OUR MORTAL BODIES UNTIL DEATH(ROMANS 7). MORE IMPORTANTLY ROMAN 8 REVEALS THE VICTORY. ATER SALVATION, RENEWING OF OUR MINDS AND TAKING ACTION BY THE WORD OF GOD, WE SHOULD BE FOCUSSING ON OUR MINISTRY OF RECONCILATION — HELPING OTHERS IN THE SAME MANNER THAT WE WERE POINTED TO CHRSIT JESUS.
“Sin cannot separate us from God? I ask you people, try the spirits, for whoever wrote this is not a person of God, but a false prophet!” Did the scripture say sin? The scriptures are not divinely inspired?, Paul is a false prophet? WOW!
The simple truth of the Gospels is that Christ reconciled us to God through the very essence of His nature, His LOVE, and yet…it is so often rejected. Why? because man in His sinful nature cannot accept that this free gift of love has nothing do with our human response to it. This scripture is pivotal to the whole doctrine of salvation, that is that the Love of God to man expressed through the death and resurrection of Christ is ever faithful, unconditional and never wavering.
:
I was a roman catholic by infant baptism and practiced weekly the Faith and Sacraments which seem to help to a degree in my journey of Truth Peace Meaning of Life. Unsatisfied, haunted with daily fear of going to Hell anytime I may die in my sins, I began to look elsewhere and accepted Christ personally in my Heart and His Finished Work on the Cross for my total Salvation. As I confessed directly to God my daily sins and CONSTANT need of His grace to change me, yet this passage seems to Show Gods Side always promising His undying Love for me no matter what. But, nothing indicates the side of mans response to His Love or lack there of to keep us totally His. Can my self will sinful nature after the assurance of Salvation separate me from His Love?
Nothing can separate us from His love, but we can separate ourselves from Him. No matter what we choose to do or not do in our daily life, God will always love us. But by those choices we separate ourselves from the life He has planned for us.
First, I Give Honor to God for the baptism of the Holy Ghost, We must realize that everyone confessing Christ isn’t a Christian. When paul was writing this he was speaking personally therefore , he knows his relationship with God so this is a personal testament to God. (TRUE) Christians realize we are Not perfect but we are to STRIVE for perfection and once it is reached we will go on to Glory… we also realize that Jesus Died for our sin not for us to dwell in our sin..His resurrection is proof of the overcoming Power we have….So if you have the Holy Ghost/ Holy spirit on the inside of you, you CAN overcome sin.. because greater is ne that is in me than he that is in the world.. Is that a Lie? No it’s the Truth ….Be Blessed All .. It’s great to believe in Jesus But have You received the Holy Ghost since ye Believed?? Acts 19:2.. Love You all with the Love of Christ.
if you notice it says nothing can separate us from the love of God “which is in Christ Jesus”. so to separate us from Gods love we would have to be separated from Christ. well if the writer is talking to saved people then our sin after we are saved doesn’t separate us from his love. yes it builds up walls and makes our hearts hardened but He is still there. that is why we repent, to strengthen and heal the relationship.
also if we cant be separated from his love which is in Christ then we cant be separated from christ… it says NOTHING can separate.. that means ourselves also
The writer is Paul, who wrote about a third of the books in the New Testament. He doesn’t say nothing can separate us from God, but nothing can separate us from the LOVE OF GOD. 1 Thess 5:19 says sin quenches the Holy Spirit. But Romans 5:8 says God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. You can be separated from God, but never from God’s love.
