Should We Love Our Pets Like We Love Our Neighbors?

There’s a lot to like about pets. The majority of them are cute, affectionate and cuddly, and all of them are just plain interesting to watch. Walk around a zoo sometime and see how excited children get over the most mundane activities of animals. But even if we might like them a whole lot, should we love them?

yes- there’s no reason why we should not tenderly care for and enjoy God’s creation, whether it be a pet, the ocean, or a garden. Pets bring joy, laughter, and companionship to a home – there’s nothing wrong with loving and enjoying their presence. Is idolizing them wrong? Yes. But there’s a big difference between love and idolatry. If we begin asking questions as to whether or not we should love “this” or love “that,” we’re missing the point of the gospel. We are to love whatever is good, true, noble, excellent, honorable, and praiseworthy; God’s creation is these things.
So delight in your pets, delight in the sunshine, the first snow, your family, and a warm cup of hot chocolate! Enjoy life and be weary of not over spiritualizing everything – you can easily miss the beauty of the present.
As Lewis says in the Screwtape Letters, “the present is the place in which time touches eternity…” So enjoy it!!!!
