"Love your neighbor" in the Bible: Matthew 22:37-40

Jesus summarizes the entirety of God's law in two simple commands: love God, and love your neighbor. Love for our neighbor should flow naturally out of our love for God.

    Dear Readers:

Hi. I think that far too many Christian churches today pay far too little attention to this particular verse from the Bible. I attend a fundamentalist Christian church, and there is a lot of talk about faith and doctrine and personal morality, but very little discussion about loving thy neighbor. You cannot earn your salvation through works, I agree with that. However, if you truly belive in Jesus Christ as the Savior of all mankind, you will show your faith by how well you follow the greatest commandment of Jesus. If you don’t, then your faith is like a clanging cymbal or a loud gong. I think that when we appear before God on Judgment Day, our faith in Jesus will be crucial, but we will also have to answer for our deeds as they demonstrated or failed to demonstrate the faith that we professed. These are my thoughts on this important topic.–Mike Bottomley

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
- 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
