The notion of life (as understood by modern day western civilization) is radically different from the Greek speaking biblical perspective. To us modern westerners life means basically biology which we can measure in culturally acceptable ways. For example if our heart is beating and blood is pumping or brain activity is occurring we say that a person is alive. If these can’t be detected with modern instruments the conclusion is death.

To ancient Greeks, however, biology was just one of two manifestations (the other being mental) of the root of life. These three “bios, psuche and zoe” encompassed the totality of life. The concept of eternal life (English understanding) was seen as the root of all life (zoe).

“Eternal life” (zoe) is a most interesting and profound notion. It means exactly what it suggests: Life without time/space boundaries (e.g. unconditional life…not born/never dies).

The question must thus be considered: If life (the root) is unconditional, then how could it make sense that it comes and goes (like some bargaining chip) in exchange for a conditional perspective?

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
- 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
