Repent and be baptized - a Christian perspective
How do we gain eternal life? By repenting and receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Peter and the other disciples carried this simple message of hope throughout the entire ancient world.

Holy Spirit baptism was not / is not for everyone. There are only two occurrances of Holy Spirit Baptism in all of the Bible.
One was the Apostles on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-15; tongues of fire, sound of rushing wind, apostles speaking in languages they had not previously learned).
The other was (Acts 10, 11) the household of Cornelius who after his Holy Spirit baptism (speaking in tongues) was baptized in water (Acts 10:44-48).
On the day of Pentecost, the three thousand (Acts 2:41) that were baptized were not Holy Spirit baptized. The tongues of fire did not sit on their heads. The three thousand were baptized in water for the forgiveness of their sins and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (indwelling).
Acts 2:1-15 baptism and Acts 2:38 baptism are two different baptisms.
At Acts 2:38, “Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
It was a long standing tradition among the Jewish people that they would walk through a pool of water for cleansing. The Jews knew about baptism in water. John the Baptist baptized in water. God was very pleased when Jesus was baptized in water. I know of no Bible scholar that does not think the baptism in Acts 2:38 is water baptism.
When Paul wrote the letter to the Ephesians more than twenty years after the day of Pentecost(Acts 2). Paul said in his letter there was just , “… one baptism…”. Would this “one baptism” be Holy Spirit baptism (sound, fire, languages) or baptism in water for the forgiveness of sins and to receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit?
Today, Holy Spirit baptism is New Testament history. The water baptism of Acts 2:38 is still (in 2010 and beyond) an opportunity for everyone who will trust and obey the Gospel of Christ (Romans, chapter 6).
Correction to the post immediately above Paul’s comment regarding “… one baptism…” is found at Ephesians 4:5.
I Cor 12:13 says “for by one Spirit are we ALL baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or gentiles, whether we be bond or free, and have been made to drink into one Spirit.” If you are part of the Body of Christ, then the one true baptism Paul talks about in Eph 4:5 is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. That’s what the book says…Not a preacher or someone trying to make it something it’s not. That’s why we take it by faith. We have to believe what it says.
Jesus and the apostles taught the same thing..
water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ and baptism of the HolyGhost
John 3:5 Acts 2:37-41 Acts 19:1-6
1 Corinthians 12:13 Ephesians 4:5
Baptism of water and of the spirit in the name of Jesus Christ is the only baptism…Any other way is false doctrine..
praying a prayer of repentence is not enough baptism of water and of the spirit must take place…
Everyone must come through Jesus Christ, any other way would be theftness/robbery!
