"Seek ye first" in the Bible: Matthew 6:33-34

It's often the case that we put our spiritual life on a lower priority than other, "more pressing" concerns in our lives. But in this passage, Jesus tells us that a properly balanced life is one that puts Jesus above our other priorities. When we seek him first (some Bibles word it "seek ye first"), God will take care of our other concerns.

  1. ThrowNoStones says:

…this is a word from God, to someone who is waiting to hear his voice, having lost the true focus of life and having bought into the cultural norm of vast monetary resources equating to happiness and contentment.

To seek money, to seek great wealth, without the instruction of God and without experiencing a consistent faith in him, can and will ultimately lead to ruin. “Putting the cart before the proverbial horse”, money placed in the wrong succession, the wrong order of life, will warp our prospective on what is real and is of eternal importence.

Like “The Living Water” that he is, Christ can only satisfy our thirst spiritually. Money misappropriated, can only leave our throats parched and dry and without relief. God supplied the children of Israel with manna from Heaven to meet their physical need for food while they were in the wilderness. In God’s economy, he supplies to us exactly what we need and when we need it. To trust him fully is to know that WE CAN DO NOTHING without him.

Our feeble attempts to control our own lives are often fueled by the Independence, self-sufficiency, and the false sense of security that money provides. Money utilized for perpetuating the cause of Christ, or in the obedience of good stewardship towards God, is not the same as the money that entices our human indulgences with the lust/love that becomes the root of all kinds of evil.

We must consciously and consistently differentiate the money that is manna, from the money that is rooted in evil, and make the choice to follow the path of righteousness in that regard. If not, then we are doomed to be slaves to that evil, and in turn, we stand to inherit the misery, moral bankruptcy, and the abject poverty that comes from placing our trust in less than God’s best for us.

  2. Rkrejcir says:

Also, Put Christ and His will first, everything else, secondary.

When we have our hearts centered upon what is really important, our real purposes and plans begin to function correctly, as our perspectives are in line with God’s. The secret to a life of contentment is having the right perspective of our place in the kingdom.

Seek first the Kingdom of God refers to our quintessential quest in life, seeking Christ as Savior and Lord. By Lord, we mean He is ruling our hearts, minds, and actions, including our motivations and desires. So, we seek what is best, as He has our best at hand. When we just look to ourselves, we miss His golden opportunities and goodness.

To seek God’s Will is our highest priority outside of our salvation. The Will of God is not just a task, or an ends to find, nor is it just a set of goals; rather, it is a hunt, and a journey. The action of seeking Him and His plan is His Will! This is the hunt and the journey that produces the principles that grow and mold us in faith and maturity (1 Pet. 5). It never ends; it is always continuing until we are called home (See our channel on God’s Will). God’s Will is for us to have a right relationship with Him. We are to recognize His sovereignty over the universe, and our lives. Righteousness, character, and virtue are the main objects in our quest. These are the jewels that we take with us into eternity! Righteousness, character, and virtue must be our essence that spills onto others. If not, we are definitely not in His Will.

How can you develop faith in God’s providence, both in His ability and His willingness to provide for you and your church?
