A spirit of self-discipline--sometimes translated as "a sound mind"--is one of the characteristics of Christ-followers. Nobody who has experienced God's grace need be timid or afraid with God at their side.

G4995 contains the lexicon reference for “sound mind” which can relate back to G4998 which carries the sense of discretion as it applies to opinion and passion.

so, the meaning of “sound mind” can relate to godly self-discipline and self-control—keeping your worldly thoughts and actions in check. such a sound mind is more obedient to what our Father in heaven has in mind. God transforms the mind, but we are responsible for keeping the world from entering its gates. a sound mind opposes the conditions of “…an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart.”(Deu 28:65)
