Sunday in the Bible - a Christian perspective
Sunday was the day that Mary and the other followers of Jesus went to visit his tomb, only to find that he had risen from the grave! Many Christians today worship on the first day of the week in commemoration of this event.

Why most Christians worship on Sunday while says that the Seventh day of the week is Saturday? Why the do not rest? Why there are so many Congregation, they all call themselves Chistians?
Bukelani
It depends on which Christian are you?
Messianic?
or
Gentile?
After all Jesus gave his gentile followers no commandments to keep Sabbath. To further complicate matters Jesus Disciples in Acts 15:1-31 Decided to not enforce Ten Commandment keeping to the Gentiles in the Church but gave them only 4 guidelines.
Abstain from meats offered unto idols
Abstain from blood
Abstain from food that is strangled
Abstain from fornication
Read what the word says perfer you fall back on EG Whites teachings…
but god who wrote with his hand in stone said Remember the sabbath and keep it holy. Even Jesus kept the sabbath when he died. and the times may have changed but he will always stay the same. yesterday, today and forever. That is the only one he said remember on. shouldn’t we keep that one?
God is telling us in Isaiah 66-
“AS the new Heaven and the new earth that I make will endure before me,” declares the Lord.
“So will your name and decendants endure. “from one moon to another and from one sabbath to another, all mankind will come and bow down before me”. says the Lord. …. Note All Mankind, neither Isrealites nor Jews nor Gentiles bt all mankind.
He goes on to say;
“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my Holy day, if you call the Sabbath delight and the Lord’s Holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, “then you will find your joy in the Lord, and i will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father jacob.”
the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
Jesus Christ is telling us (Mathew 2)that he is the Lord of the sabath.
“The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath, therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the sabbath.”
Note that the Sabbath was given to man by God, he sanctified it and made it holy. even our Lord Jesus Christ who is our example also kept the sabbath, then who are we not to keep the sabbath of the Lord?
Any day that was put by man to be worshiped or sanctfied is against the will of God, and if not for the Lord then for the enemy.
God is telling us that “many are they that worrship me but in vain.”
The Sabbath is so important to our salvation. God set us an example for us to follow. He created the Earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th day. Which is to show us that his spiritual creation would take 6 thousand years then we would rest on the Sabbath of a thousand years. God evn made it one of the 10 Commandments starting with the words “Remember the Sabbath”. Why did God say it to us this way? Well it is because God, who knows everything, knew we would forget so he told us to remember. Jesus kept the Sabbath as was his custom and also so did the Apostles. I wasn’t until after the last apostle died (about 106 AD) that Sunday servive began to take place. So if Jesus’ and his followers kept the biblical Sabbath shouldn’t we? Aren’t we Christians? Christian means “Christ-like” or a follower of Christ. The Sabbath is a commemoration of the creation and Resurection Day is the day Jesus rose from the dead. These are two different Festivals of God and both should be observed respectivly. Above some one wrote that it depends on what kink of Christian you are, but the hard truth is that there was only one Christ not several different kinds. If we want to worship God in spirit and truth we have to follow the examples of the bible and not put our trust in a teaching made by men who killed the saints of the early church. Please, for the sake of you and your family, study the bible and follow its teachings. The Biblical Sabbath is the 7th day of the week (Saturday not Sunday). If you study you will find many differences between what the bible teaches and what the most churches practice. Who should we follow…a pope, a priest, a pastor or Christ? Aren’t we Christians???
I forgot to mention that the Parable of the Weeds and the Wheat directly relates to this topic. The good seed (wheat) is the word of God tought by Jesus and the bad seed (false teachings) came when every one had fallen asleep. Remember this is a parable or a story with a hidden meaning. Jesus refered to Lazarus as sleeping even though he was dead. So in this paprable Jesus said the false teaching (bad seed or the weeds) will come after he and the apostles (workers of the field) fell asleep or died. This is when historiclly Sunday worship stared (while John, the last Apostle, was exiled on the Island of Patmos) just as Jesus Prophecied. The bible ends with Jesus saying that if any one takes away from the book that he will take away from him his share in the tree of life and that if anyone adds to the book he will add to them the palgues described in Revelations. By not worshipping on the Sabbath you would be taking away from Gods loving lessons and if you worship on Sunday (which if you do I could only assume that you don’t worship on Saturday too) you would be adding (and subsequently be taking away too)to Gods teachings. So again who should you follow man or God? Who can give you salvation, man or God? Remember the Sabbath Day by Keeping it Holy is the word of God. God Bless You!
Well, there is a reason we do church the way most practice it today. There are essential patterns, rooted in the Old Testament, that God requires so we can respond to and give honor to Him. These patterns, practiced by the early church, have evolved into what we have today.
The Christian church today as a whole recognizes Sunday as the Sabbath and day to do church because it is the day Jesus rose from the dead (the exception is the Seventh Day Adventists, the Seventh Day Baptists and some Christian Messianic groups such as Jews for Jesus). But, Scripture is clear that day now is irrelevant, pointing out that every day is a day to honor God and worship Him (Matt. 12:1-12; Rom. 12:1; Col. 2:16-23; Heb. 4:8-11).

In order to follow God the way he Perscribed we have to follow his example. An example set by man is not Gods will. Jesus went and studied the scriptures on the Sabbath as was his custom (Luke 4:15-17). And Paul one of the greatest Apostles did the same (Acts 17:1-3). If Christ abolished the law why was it his custom too? A custom is something we do often and it was there custom to go to a church (which comes from a greek word meaning a gathering of Gods people, it by definition does not mean a certain building). Christ him self said he did not come to abolish the law but to full fill it (Matt. 5:17-19).
I ask you to take a look at Cain & Abel. both made a offering to the LORD. One was done according to what pleased God and it was accepted by Him the other was done according to what pleased man and was not accepted by God. This story was repeated over and over through out the bible. Why is that, the scriptures are there to teach us. If we don’t follow what the bible says what good is it? If we claim to be Christian which means we follow Gods word shouldn’t we listen to it (John 8:46-48)? Jesus told us one of the most powerful this in Matt chapter 7;20-23, Only Christians call Jesus Lord, you will never meet a Buddist or an Atheist call God Lord. Jesus said these people, who do good in the eyes of man have no place with him. Why do you suppose he said “Away from me I never knew you”? Exodus 31:14-17 says the Sabbath will be a sign between God and his people. That is why Jesus said “Away from Me, I never knew you”, because the people he is talking about did not have the sign. The Sabbath was given to the people for us to be made Holy, God is aleady Holy and doesn’t need to be made anything nor does He need to rest. We are the ones who need rest and desperatly need to be made holy.
Remember Jesus came to fulfill the law not abolish it. Do we live in lawlessness? A look at any urban city will show you most people are. They don’t even follow man’s law. If the Sabbath was not to be observed it wouldn’t have been Paul’s custom nor any of the early Church, but they did. Christ is our Sheperd, he is our guide we must follow Him. Please study the scriptures they will show you the way not man.
While All verses in the Bible are good we need to understand the context and current events of time. Matt, 12:1-12 Jesus was showing us that physical rest isn’t the fulfillment of the Sabbath law. Our bodies are the temple and the rest should be spiritual not physical (Romans chapter 12). Also it is about how priest were aloud to work that day because they need to work for the LORD. Hebrews 6:19-20 shows us that Jesus is a high priest in the order of Melchizedek. His disibles are his students, so they are learning to be priests in this order. Therefore it is ok for them to get food on the Sabbath because they have to sustain themselves for the work of God. The Order of Melchizedek replaces the Order of Aaron. It doesn’t abolish it.
Colossians 2:16-23 You need to understand that at the time disputes rose in the churches as to how to worship on the Sabbath. This was written by Paul, who kept the Sabbath with out a doubt (Acts 17:1-3), he wrote this too as said in Col: 1:2 [ 1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,To the holy and faithful brothers in Christ at Colosse]. If paul wrote this and meant not to keep the Sabbath he was a hypocrite and I sure don’t believe he was. Do You?
Hebrews chapter 4 asks us to make every effort to enter the WHAT rest the Sabbath rest. And in Matthew 24 Jesus is speaking of the last Days when he said “(20)Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath”. Would Jesus point out the Sabbath in the future if we don’t need to worry about it? Wouldn’t he just say prey that your flight doen’t take place on ANY Day. God made it a commandment to (8) “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. A Father would only tell a child of his to remember something only if he felt that that child would forget. Matthew 5:19 “Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” To God all the commandments are important an upholding them is premier under pain of Death (in the Old Testement it was physical death and in the New it is spiritual death). Would you teach someone it’s ok to murder, I hope not, then why teach someone to break the Sabbath.
Satan will decieve the whole Earth into not following God. Where is God going to which we need to follow, into the Sabbath Rest.
Matthew 7:13-15
The Narrow and Wide Gates
13″Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
15″Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
The wide gate is something easy and accepted by many. The narrow gate is the truths aboout the bible that are hard to accept. Our life of faith isn’t an easy road with practices and laws that sound good to human ears. It’s the hard road of service to God that is pleasing to him. Let us all really take a look and see if our offering to God is by our standards or His. God Bless you.
I do believe in “THE Sabbath” that God made for man, and as for me and mine we shall follow the one and only True God, Who made The Sabbath, JESUS, and the one who made the only cammand that started with the word “REMEMBER”, people need to wake up and REMEMBER “THE” true Sabbath OF GOD, and be blessed by GOD.
As for gentiles not being under the law, I say look at Gods book and see; Romans 3:28-30 (New International Version)
28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. 29Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.
31Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.
We as Gods people need to uphold Gods SEVENTH DAY Sabbath also, and not MAN’S first day sunday law!
Exodus 31:15
Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
Leviticus 23:3
Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
Satan will decieve the whole Earth into not following God. Where is God going,? to which we need to follow,? into the SEVENTH DAY Sabbath Rest.
Matthew 5:48
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
STUDY THE SCRIPTURES DAILY AND SEE IF WHAT IS SAID IS SO.
2 Timothy 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
Galatians 3:22
But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
What is the spirit of the law? The Ten Commandments say not to murder, but Jesus said that being angry will be counted as murder, or lustful thoughts will be counted as adultery. If we compare this to keeping the Sabbath, I believe we can find a similar parallel. We are to keep only one day holy, according to the Ten Commandments, but what is the spirit behind this commandment? Jesus told us not to worry about earthly things, because even the sparrow will have food. I find tremendous rest and comfort that Jesus/God/Holy Spirit are actively involved on a daily basis. I believe part of Jesus’ message is that every day is holy to God, and that we can find rest in Him on a daily basis. We are not to rely on our own power on any day, and we are to totally trust in His power.
Thanks that can help me. I am a Christian, I love God, but something new for me when I heard the Sabbath is only on Saturday. Do you agree? For 63 years I am used to go to Churh on Sunday, later on teach a Sunday School class.
Part of the problem is that many of us as Christians want to use Christ’s resurrection on Sunday as a means to justify a Sunday day of worship. However, Christ did not rise from the dead to establish a new day of worship. There is a real question we should be asking that is the key to understanding this. Why did Yeshua(Jesus) wait three days to rise from the dead? Why not right away or the next day? Instead He waited three days. I am working on a book and had to answer this very difficult question for myself. In the Old Testament there are several annual Sabbaths and Feasts that were going on at the time of Christ’s death and resurrection. Not just the Passover. In their order that week the following events occurred. Passover, The Preparation Day (mentioned in John 19:31 which is also mentioned is prior to the special or high Sabbath which was the Feast of Unleavened Bread), The Feast of Unleavened Bread, The First Fruits (Wave Sheave) offering which was the start of the Feast of Weeks which began the count of 49 days up to Pentecost. Christ rose on Sunday in honor of the First Fruits offering to become the First Fruits of mankind. The First Fruits offering during Yashua’s (Jesus) time was offered on the Sunday following the first weekly Sabbath that followed the Feast of Unleavened Bread. That is why Paul says in his letter to the Colossians 2:16-17 that these were only a shadow of things to come, Christ was the reality. Christ was the fulfillment of what these feasts and annual sabbaths represented. For those interested in further study of these feasts you may want to read Leviticus 23.
I hope this helps someone. The Sabbath is still the correct day of worship.
