Surrender in the Bible: 1 Corinthians 13:2-3

The idea of "surrendering ourselves to the flames"--becoming a martyr for Christ--seems like it would be the most extreme and holy form of devotion to God. But this passage teaches us that even such an extreme act gains us nothing, if our lives and relationships are not characterized by love.

We are his hand, and feet, we are his people, his children, it is only He that is great, he makes us somebody, without him we are nothing, regardless of what we have or what we do. For through him – The great I AM, are we anything.

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
