"Tattoo" in the Bible: Leviticus 19:28

It was important for God's people in the Old Testament to separate themselves physically and spiritually from the practices of their evil, idol-worshiping neighbors. Christians debate today whether this prohibition on tattoos applies to the modern church, but the ancient Israelites at least were forbidden to have them.

I am not sure that it is entirely wrong. Some wear tattoos for the living, inscribe their childrens names onto their skin. I don’t believe that tattoos are the thing to do, I think my intuition says not to.

  2. Ray says:

The Scripture is very clear: ‘make no marks’. As to who says so, also clear: ‘I am the LORD’. That’s enough for this sinner saved by grace.

My intuition says not to, also. And the Bible also says that if you have doubt about something not to do it. Without faith, it is sin. Something like that. Romans 13? Anyway, I think God likes us just like we are and he likes us to be unencombered with allegiances to other things besides Himself, even if they seem to be good at the time. He said not to do it. He doesn’t change. He has a reason. We are so good at rationalizing. Every time I have to talk myself into something, I regret it. So leave it alone.

The verse was in Romans 14: 22, 23.

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
- 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
