"Widow" in the Bible: James 1:27

Both the Old and New Testaments contain many exhortations to care for widows and orphans. Widows and orphans have been cut off from the rest of society and lack the family support structures that the rest of us enjoy. We live in a culture different from that of ancient Israel, but we are still obligated to help those on the fringes of society.

Marie – I am so sorry for you loss and espcially for not having the support you needed and deserved. You have reminded me how important it is to not assume that those with lost loved ones have lots of support from their close family and friends.

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
- 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
