Have you read the entire Bible?

I recently came across a statistic claiming that only about 10% of professing Christians have read the entire Bible. Does that 10% include you? Why or why not?

I have tried many times to read through the Bible. I always get hung up in the books of law. I am now reading with a group chronologically. We are pretty slow (lots of conversations) but I have high hopes for success this time!

PLease advise steps to take in order to complete reading of the Bible

  4. Gjukich says:

I have read through the Bible quite a few times. I did it in order the first couple of times and found it difficult. What I do now when I decide to go through the whole Bible, is pray and choose a book; say the Gospel of John. I read it and then check it off in the index of my Bible and pray and choose another book, say I Samuel. I keep doing this until I have read every book. When I decide to read through the Bible again, I use a different color of pen to make the check marks or use an X instead of a check.

  5. Keith Payne says:

I am now in procees of reading it through for the first time. I just have a few more chapters to read to complete it. Cover to Cover by Selwyn Hughes and Trevor J Partridge have been a great help before using cover to cover i found very difficult to read through the whole bible.

I have read throught the bible quite a few times. When I accepted Christ as an adult, my pastor challenged me to make God a vow and to keep it. My vow was to read the bible each day. I read each morning before I start my day. I have been reading since April 2004. I usually read at least a chapter a day with the notes (NIV Study bible). Some days I get caught up and read more. I have grown extremely since then and have only missed a few days during that time. It only takes a few minutes. I find that I like some books more than others and have found that I skip over some of the genealogies. Your strength in God is found in your vows. I made mine and he has blessed me since. I also started in the audio ministry at my church. It has kept me in times that i didn’t want to attend church because I had a job to do. It has truly been a blessing. Become active in your church. It will bless you and keep you in times that you want to take a Sunday off.

  8. Rkrejcir says:

If you need help with this, Reading through the Bible, along with prayer is the essential way to grow in Christ!

If you want to develop your faith as a Christian, then you must set aside time for prayer and reading the Bible. Yet, so few of us do so! You must ask the question, what gets in the way of my time with God? How much does TV, over working, or hanging with friends take of you and your time?

No, have tried many times. even own “bible through a year” bible for 15 yrs. Made it as far as April. It’s not just the bible I quit, I quit everything. Im a recovering alcoholic; never a whole yr without a drink, Signed up for a marathon; never did it. i enjoy exercising; but never a year of steady working out.
Bottom line, I’m a quitter, but I have hope. I believe with a dependency on the Lord I can still change this character defect. With over 40 yrs on this earth, I believe an old dog can learn new tricks.
2010 is around the corner, pray that I can perserve another try.

  10. Linda Williams says:

I have read through the Bible several times.. Most times, I have started at Genesis, but like the lady above, when you get into Lev. it is challenging to stay on course.. so if this is a problem, my suggestion is to stop and go on to Gospels.. What I do now, is skip around, usually NT one chapter and OT one chapter at least each evening. this is when I like my quiet time, as this is only time, it is quiet in the house. ha.. But my pastor and his wife both suggested to mark your Bible, So I put the date I read this chapter, this helps you know you have already read it. I also write prayers in my Bible in certain areas that God has spoken to me about certain situations in my life.
When finished with a Bible, In the front, I write to each grandchild a note, as this Bible will be theirs one day. So far I have three finished for my grandchildren. I have three more grandchildren and am now working on my fourth Bible. I have to say it is very rewarding to read all the way through.
the first time, I did this and may help you.. I had a card with each Book of Bible, and would check off as I finished and my granddaughter who loves the Bible and knew that she would get it one day (it is the NIV Rainbow Bible) loved seeing how many Books I had checked. I wound up reading through this one twice. Once you read Leviticus it really is not that hard.. stay with it, you will be blessed at what all you have learned and can teach others.

I’m not sure. I’ve never kept track. I have the Bible on cd which helps with areas like the books of the Law

  12. harley.dad says:

I have read through the bible. What now? Do I read through it again. What I would really like is something online to dive in a little further and study areas of the bible instead of just reading it through again. Any help???

  13. yramos says:

It sure does, i don’t know what my life would be if i didn’t specially with the trust issue i have. I like to experience things through God’s amazing word, and be sure that when someone says something is in the Bible i know if is in the Bible or not.

  14. FireSpeaks says:

I have read the bible all the way through a number of times. for many years I was at a point where I thought I would never read it through than I hear a famous Evangelist say he read the bible 3 times per year. after that I was able to do it in about 5 months.

I think by reading it through I have a understanding of the harmony of God’s word. I’m not that quick to agree with what I hear a person say because he/she has a big church or TV program.

I still read the bible from Genesis to Revelations but it more of a study that a read. I can spend 5 or 6 days on one Chapter, or one verse. Also commentaries and other study tools allow me to get a better understanding of what I read.

Reading completely through the bible is great, but once you’ve done it than what? Have you grown by it? if not read it again. If the only thing you got from it is the ability to say “I’ve done it” than you’ve wasted your time

  15. Ntomby says:

I’ve tried to read my bible according to the bible on the back of my bible NIV but could’nt keep up to standard then i gave up, so help me what’s the best way to read the whole bible without giving half way down the line?

  16. frizzylau says:

I think ‘getting bored’ is an excuse. It’s mostly caused by A- reading TOO SLOWLY and B- this is obvious: Spiritual Warfare. Do you really think the enemy wants you to grow deep in your faith? Hm.

The ways I have found to stay on track are:
Follow a prescribed plan. I am using the http://www.youversion.com software for my mobile phone and the “Read the Bible in 90 Days” plan. I really think a lot of people get bored or give up because they’re reading it too slowly!! Think about it. Would you read a novel by your favorite author one sentence a day? Uh, no. You’d get bored and quickly lose the thread of the story. It would become drudgery rather than the delight that reading can be.

Try an audio version. Shop around to make sure the reader is not going to put you to sleep. Follow along with the written text in front of you if that helps. Follow a reading plan. Get a few people together and keep one another accountable… even be competitive about it (this helps a lot of people stay motivated).

It’s a dieting adage but, just because you stumble on one step doesn’t mean you throw yourself down the stairs. So, you missed a couple days. So? You’re gonna chuck the whole plan because of a couple days? discipline yourself, determine that if Christ could go to the cross, you can ’suffer’ through reading 12 pages a day (which is what you average on the 90 Day plan). Just do it!

  18. Elder Grim says:

When I became a christian, the first thing I did was to read the Old Testament through in the Living Bible. (I already knew the NT pretty well)
With that version I was able to read several chapters a night. I have since read it in other versions and has been a real blessing to me over the last 40 years.

  19. jackflash says:

God led me to begin reading the Bible on January 1, 2002. I figured out that if I read 4 chapters a day, beginning with Genesis, I could read the entire Bible in a year. I have read it twice, and have read the New Testament many times, reading one chapter a day.

  20. PastorC says:

I have read the entire bible several times and I still can’t see why people dont know this is the best book ever… it has everything in it, sex, violence, thriller, love, murder, passion, GOD’s eternal Plan, scinece, wisdom, confusion, lust, pornography, sin, faith, hope, resurection, revenge, most importantly, salvation, you name it you’ll find it in the bible… the most controvercial book or collection of books that has and is still standing the test of time..
I first started reading as a novice while I was a Catholic and Young Christian… then I started questioning the reality of the bible when I graduated High school, exposed to science in college and life.. I lost meaning and started serching again before GOD through Christ Jesus Showed me the way and I became Born again.. I listened to the entire audio bible KJV Alex Scourby, and the NIV.. many times.. it brough the book alive and I have since love the way the Lord ministers to me whenever I pick it up..if you really want to see GOD manifest, read it all more than once.. you will never regret it…listening to audio and reading along make it even better..
I have read many version and listened to many audio version both dramatised and ordinary.. Great experience ever..

  21. PastorC says:

Praying for God’s guidiance is the best way when you pick up the holy book..complete devotion and commitment is essential to read the whole bible.. it may be difficult but if you love God and learn form his love for you and know how important you are to him, you will be jelous enough to spend time with the book more than anything to see you finish it..
reading for knowledge is not enough and should not be the reason to want to get through the Bible..you will get frustrated.. reading for wisdon and to get closer and have a relationship is the key to completing the Great Book (Holy Bible) you need dicipline, sacrifice, patience and parceverance to get through the first five books… then the books of Samuel and Kings should all be read together with the Prophets, and the new teatament with the gospels together then letters of John and revelation together before reading Puls letters and the rest.. I find it easy this way but again, this is not really a prescibed way… Pray and let God guide you, but you must be dedicated and have the raw passion to Know GOD in Person.. the zeal of Phenaehas is the best way to go about it, the unwavering dicipliship of Joshua… Key..the Love and sacrifice of Christ.. come what may is master of the act get closer and complete the book.. I absolutely love God’s Word! I have read it through a few times, twice with the Through the Bible in 90 Days program. While I appreciate the B90 program for moving quickly enough to help grab a glimpse of the over all picture of the Bible; there is nothing like a daily diet of THE Bread of Life!

  23. chewe says:

the aim shoul not be to read the whole bible but to understand what you read.I can assure you no one can read the whole bible with the aim of understanding. Those who have managed to read the whole bible, then they forgot what they read on the 5th day.You always forget where you are coming!I think real christianity is not in finishing the whole bible but living what you have understood in the bible.

  24. servantsteve says:

I’ve read the Bible through about 25 times. I like listening to it on CD in my car. Driving back and forth to work, it takes about 3 months for my commute. I still read it from a written page as well. I want God’s word to live in my heart so I can draw on His wisdom when encountering the world around me. Nothing has helped me more to develop a humble and compassionate heart than to get to know God through His word.

  25. MG279 says:

I finished my first cover-to-cover read-through of the Bible a few months ago. I stayed up really late just so I could get through Revelation. I got a good feeling after I had finished it! -Michael

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
