Jepthah in the Bible: Judges 11:1-40
Jepthah's story is a story of triumph and misery. He was solicited to help defeat the Ammonites. He made a vow to God that he would sacrifice the first thing that came out of his door to meet him if he would only have victory. To his horror, his only daughter came out to meet him. Since he had made the vow to God, it could not be broken and she was sacrificed two months later.
