God spared Lot and his family from the destruction raining down on Sodom and Gomorrah. But Lot's wife looked back as she fled, perhaps out of regret at leaving her old life behind her--and was turned into a pillar of salt.

When God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, he rescued Lot and his family from the devastation. But Lot's wife turned and looked back, despite a command to the contrary, and became a pillar of salt. Her death is sometimes taken as a lesson about looking back fondly at sin.
