Friday ministry updates—God and the NFL; mourning William MacDonald; and more

As the week closes, we’ve got a big group of miscellaneous updates from an assortment of Gospel.com ministries. Here’s some the latest new content from the community:

  • Terry Mattingly, who you might recognize as one of the writers behind GetReligion.org has for many years penned a weekly column about religion in the media. The latest column, God and the NFL Giants (again), looks at the phenomenon of famous sports figures praising God for their victories on national TV:

So what are journalists supposed to do when gridiron giants start holding hands and forming prayer circles at midfield? It’s one thing to point in thanksgiving toward heaven after a touchdown. Most journalists think it’s something else to mention Jesus Christ a dozen times a minute on live television.

  • Blaine Smith of Nehemiah Ministries has a new column up about the importance of setting goals for yourself. With New Year’s not very far behind us, that timely advice.
  • A new Online Pulpit entry is also up—in it, Lee Cook argues that “American church has entered a cultural, moral and intellectual exile. The outside world rejects the church and its teachings because it believes the church has nothing to offer.” So is that a good thing or a bad thing? Read the column to find out Cook’s take.
  • Uplook Ministries mourns the passing of William MacDonald, who they describe as “one of the least known best-selling authors in the world.” Read their eulogy to get an idea of the role in played in the body of Christ, and head over to Sermon Index to listen to some of MacDonald’s sermons and Bible studies for yourself.

That’s enough reading to keep you busy through the weekend—see you next week!
