Does your Family Light Candles During Advent?

Advent, much like Lent, is a time of expectation. The lighting of advent candles on the advent wreath is one way Christians mark off the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Does your family light candles during advent? Does your church?

My family doesn’t. Actually I am married now, maybe we should start that tradition next year. My church does though, I think every church i know does. What is the history behind it? Why do people do it?

The Advent Wreath custom comes from Germany and Austria. It can be very beautiful. For a good description, read “The Trapp Family Singers” and “Maria” by Maria Von Trapp (the woman on whose life story “The Sound of Music” was based).

We do it Christmas Eve in our home, taking turns reading scripture and lighting a candle. The scriptures can be all from Luke 2, or others that are meaningful to you and your family. At the end, we all light the center Christ Candle as we say together: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulders. And His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
