Not sure how this answer fits theologically (i.e., for a debate)– In combination with our knowledge of the character of God, can we view the destroying of a nation as the removal of cancer from the human body? With the sex/religion activities of worshiping demon-gods as if they were Jehovah God and man’s prideful bent, the subsequent depravity of idol worship which included sacrificing infants (burning them alive) to appease and gain goodwill from their gods would in time infect the other nations. God was protecting not just His chosen people but also the surrounding peoples in the land.

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
- 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
