Have you ever fasted?

Fasting is willfully giving up something for a length of time. For Christians, we fast in order to put ourselves in a spiritually vulnerable state. When we go without, we must find something to fulfill us, and when done in a correct spirit that something we find fulfillment in is God.

People traditionally fast from food and drink, but sometimes people fast from speech, media or certain activities. Personally speaking, I’ve fasted from not only food, but everything to television to hot showers (the latter a good deal more difficult to give up than the former).

What about you? Have you ever fasted?

  • Truly fasting can be in many ways. It takes discipline and determination. Hmm… what shall I give up? maybe something I really crave for.

    YES!!!

When you take a look at our Western culture, with fast food places on almost every corner and countless opportunities to eat whatever you wish, even a committed Christian might never consider Fasting. Yet, one of the classic, Christian aspects of growing deeper in the faith is Fasting because it opens us up before our holy God. Our minds are cleared to seek Christ without distractions and interruptions; therefore, we can have our sin revealed, experience His precepts, see our disobedience, and feel remorse so we will repent. We can channel our behavior away from ourselves and toward Him. Even though we may feel distraction with our stomach aching and growling, we can more easily pour ourselves out to the Lord. But, believe it or not, as a person who loves food, rarely do I feel hungry when I am Fasting!

I have fasted before from food and other things that may hinder us from hearing from God about a job, decisions we make and just everyday life. As we kill our flesh daily we begin to see that the Spiritual Man is growing. As Christians we are to live Holy lives because believe it or not there are people who are looking at us to see how we will respond to different circumstances that face the Believer as well as people who have not accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior.

This is for Willie who asked the question if someone can have water during fasting. Different people say different things including pastors. I know that GOD is a compassionate God and I do not believe He would want someone to get sick during fasting. Therefore, I believe that He would not deny anyone to have water during fasting. Being dehydrated would only make someone sick and weak and I do not think this is the purpose of fasting. Fasting is bringing a specific prayer request to the Lord. It is showing how serious we are about this prayer that we are willing to deny ourselves food (sacrifice) for a positive answer. I also think this can involve a spiritual battle since Jesus himself said regarding certain situations, that it needs prayer and fasting. You don’t have to be perfect during a fast. God knows the sincerity of your heart.

I felt that God lead me to fast because I was conflicted about a matter dealing with my disobedience . I started Sunday night and now I am searching for when am I suppose to finish. I asked my husband and he suggested the biblverse.com. And here I am. I have sinned in many ways for months and it all has come to a terrible head. I ask God to help me and I pray daily for guidance and forgiveness. This is my first time fasting this long and I am not sure when should I stop. I think about the bible and read the excerpts.I asked God and I have not received an answer.

I am currently fasting from food. This is because I believe it is a form of powerful prayer when done in the right way. I am praying for a well paying job so as to relocate from my current residence. This is my major reason of fasting and I am praying that it really works out for me because of my current desperation. I think it will also give me some humility so that in return God can abundantly bless me. Be blessed.
