Today’s Devotional: Reading and Believing

Even though our devotional today from Our Daily Bread is short, it’s an excellent reminder of why studying the Bible is such a spiritually valuable use of our time. Reading the Bible forces us to respond to Jesus. Without investing the time to open our hearts and read about his life and ministry, we have a hard time ever really make a decision on whether or not to follow him:

Jesus told a group of religious leaders, who were well acquainted with the Old Testament but violently opposed to Him, You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life (John 5:39-40).

It requires an open heart as well as an inquiring mind to study the Bible. When we discover Jesus as the Person to whom the entire Bible points, we must then decide how to respond to Him.

There is great joy for all who will open their hearts to Christ and find life in Him.

When did you make the jump from intellectually knowing about Jesus to actively following Him?

I really don’t understand people… Many “Christians” say they first believed such and such a date and I gave my heart to Christ on (whatever date). John said in agreement with the Miracles that Jesus Performed as he walked here on earth “Many other Miracles did Jesus do, but these O have written. That you might read, and by reading, believe, and by believing have life in his name. That my friend is my salvation….I have no date time or year, it just is…. Am I not following his word???

That’s the way I am, Bill. I think it is okay, and I cannot get it into one moment too well, I just keep going and trusting and God continues to bless it, I think I do have a relationship with God and not necessarily a starting day or time. Like Joyce said, just trust!

John 3:16 says believe. We are saved by placing our trust in Jesus Christ alone….HE died for our sins and rose again. When we hear this truth and believe, we are saved. Many people know the exact time this belief first occurred. Some don’t. I believe that, as long as a person is trusting Christ alone for their salvation, that person is saved. John 5:24

The first step to salvation is belief, so I agree with all the previous comments. But there has to be more than just belief. Just living right in your own eyes will not guarantee you into heaven. John 3:5 says, “Jesus answered,Verily,Verily,I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Water= Baptism in Jesus name. Spirit= Holy Ghost (speaking in unknown tongues.

And yes I remember the day I was filled and changed my life. August 7th, 2007. Thank u Jesus. God Bless you all.
