Writing for the Web requires the style and gifts of the journalist, not the preacher. The Press has had more than 200 years to learn how to communicate effectively in print. Learn from them. Read books on journalistic writing. Observe the way newspapers and magazines tell stories. They know the rules for clear communication and keeping a reader’s interest. “These skills pertain equally to the Web. We need to grab attention fast!” says journalistic writing expert Marshall Cook. If you are a preacher or an evangelist, sorry – you have some unlearning to do. Your gifts do not transfer directly to the Web!

Teaching IT, computer use, and Web skills, can be an entry point for Christian evangelism
Teaching English has long been a major point of contact and 'way in' for missionaries in many countries. In Japan, for instance, a majority of Christians first came into contact with the Gospel via English lessons. (It is now possible to teach English online as a form of sensitive outreach.) Around the world, there is now a big hunger by people who want to learn how to use computers and gain IT and Web skills – a genuine practical felt need. They see it as a major part of their education and a means of employment advancement. There is thus a big doorway open for local churches and mission agencies to teach these skills.

Japan: the need for mobile and web evangelism outreach in Japanese: Internet ministry mission church growth missionary strategies.
One of the ‘major modern mission misses’ (shall we call these ‘4Ms’?) of our time is the huge disparity between the highly-wired, tech-loving 127-million Japanese population, and the searing lack of online evangelism in the Japanese language. Many aspects of the Web are hugely popular in Japan, because in a highly-regimented and formal society, it provides a creative outlet for expression. (See this detailed article from Wired Magazine.) However, since most Japanese are non-seekers, they are most unlikely to be searching for Christian material online. There are, we believe, three keys to online evangelism: building incarnational relationships, addressing felt needs, and using Japanese culture. All three approaches are beautifully illustrated in this account from a missionary in Japan.
